Subject: EXTERNAL Public comment regarding Kalispell Main Street
Dear Mayor Johnson and Kalispell City Council Members,
My name is Dorothy Drury and I live at 168 Buffalo Stage in Kalispell.
Thankyou foryour work contemplating the future of downtown Kalispell. I am writing to urge you to move
forward with the Main Street Safety Action Plan (and apologize if this is not the appropriate time to share
these particular comments) and to apply for grant funding.
I love our town. I grew up here, and I have chosen to raise my family here. There are many special reasons
for this, but our downtown is not one of them. Some of my most anxious moments as a parent these days
happens when my kids (ages 7 and 10) exit their taekwondo studio on Main. While most drivers are
courteous, too many don't pause to check for pedestrians when they turn, or blast through yellow lights.
They treat our downtown like a highway extension.
Additionally, when guests come to visit, we often choose to dine and shop in Whitefish or Bigfork
because of the atmosphere. Kalispell Main does not feel like a place of pride, despite our great services,
stores, and the perennially beautiful flowers pots in the summer.
Change always comes with pros and cons. I would gladly give up the con of a few minutes of my life each
day while moving through traffic to enjoy the pros of a more walkable, safer, calmer, family-friendly,
classic downtown space. Kalispell deserves better!
Thankyou!
Dorothy
