I am writing to express my concern, frustration, and anger at the proposed redesign of Main Street. While I am
not a citizen of Kalispell, I have family there and I visit annually. In fact, our family has lived in Kalispell for well
over 100 years. I don't understand the rationale for removing a lane in each direction. Main Street is already
extremely congested throughout the day, especially in the summers. Why in the world would you remove a
lane of traffic? This will only make the backups longer and cause even more congestion and road rage. What
you do need to do is change your traffic light patterns so there is a way for north or southbound traffic to be
able to turn left safely instead of only allowing it certain hours of the day.
What is the purpose of enlarging the sidewalks? Do you actually think people will make use of some tables?
The warm weather season is too short to make that change. The width of the sidewalks is just fine. If you want
to upgrade them, then just make sure they are level and safe.
Kalispell's Main Street is so pretty and historic. Please don't mess with it. As a former Montana resident turned
tourist, let me tell you that the changes you are proposing are going to turn off visitors, not entice them. My
family who lives there full-time is adamantly against this proposal. They know how traffic is on a daily basis,
especially during tourist season, and they agree that these changes are not going to be a positive change.
Stop having Whitefish envy and embrace the beauty of Kalispell.
