I wish to submit my comment in opposition to the proposed changes to Main St.
Having moved from an area where streets were modified to make them more bicycle or
pedestrian friendly, they ultimately became unfriendly to vehicles and potential customers for
those businesses. The bicycles and pedestrians will not make up for the lost automobile
customers.
The lovely images of the proposal show one of the beautiful summer days we see, but don't
show the challenges of moving through those same streets when there is snow at each curb
and down the middle.
As this is designated a Historic Area, every effort should be made to preserve it that way. It
makes this city unique and gives visitors a reason to come here. Look to the other cities who
have implemented this type of anti-traffic measures and see if it is actually successful. Keep in
mind their climate compared to ours as well.
Finally, automobile traffic works like water. Make travel too difficult in one location, the traffic
just moves into the neighborhoods. The current two lane each direction allows vehicles to
parallel park without bringing the street to a stop. The proposed version would eliminate that
feature.
If anything needs to change on Main St, put the traffic lights at Center on the same schedule as
the others so it flashes yellow at night. It would help retain the charm of the historic district.
