URBAN FORESTRY COMMITTEE
MINUTES
Wednesday, November 13, 2024, 4 - 5 p.m.
In attendance: Tree Board Members- Tony Nelson, Erin Stieber, Martin Rippens, Judy
Rosenfeld-Cox, Bette Albright, April Vomfell, Staff- Fred B, Alayna B
Public Comment: No public comment was given
Approve Minutes:
o Approved October minutes- Judy made a motion to approve, Bette seconded the
motion. All approved.
Current Business:
o Current work update was provided.
➢ Contractor
▪ Fall removal contract- 51 large trees
▪ 6 remaining to remove, 10 stumps still to remove
➢ Inhouse
▪ Northridge & Thompson Memorial Park pruning complete
▪ Currently at Lawrence Park
▪ Since October’s meeting 60 trees have been pruned
▪ 40’ genie lift for small/medium sized pruning has arrived
o Arbor Day
➢ Location- Lawrence Park
➢ Theme- Plant a Cooler Future
▪ Sent to 3rd graders, hope to have designs by December 10th
➢ Members agreed to various Arbor Day task
▪ Food- Tony, discussed starting burgers earlier
▪ Students- Erin
▪ Booths- April, discussed needing help in the morning putting out
signs
▪ Sponsors- Judy
▪ Volunteers- Emma & Martin, discussed inviting past Tree Board
members to assist with the day.
▪ Media- Bette
▪ Outreach- Alayna, someone suggested incorporating Kalispell Cruise
▪ Ceremony- Fred
o Tree Equity Grant
➢ $31k + $23k match - $54k for tree planting
➢ 3 prong approach- Volunteer event (May 3rd), Hire MCC for a week or two,
contractor/staff
➢ Had to drop from 250 to 200 trees
o Eagle Scout project at Woodland to install tree markers with info about trees
➢ Passed out pictures from the project and discussed developing a brochure for
the project
o Planning for 2025
➢ Review tree species list
▪ Fred encouraged members to review two other communities tree
species list and be prepared to report at December meeting
➢ Tree pruning/planting workshop
▪ Discussed possibly an early April workshop
➢ Tree Walk
▪ Possibly a June Walk at Woodland Park and a July walk at Lawrence
Park
➢ Urban Forestry Day Camp
▪ Tuesday July 8th was suggested as a possible day to commit to for this
event.
➢ Watering Campaign
▪ Would like to develop a water campaign in June to deliver in July
