SUBJECT: Purchase of new Ford Ambulance Chassis and Box Re -mount

BACKGROUND:
The Kalispell Fire Department currently has 3 ambulances in its fleet. Medic 621 is a 2006
Ford/Horton Ambulance with high mileage and a lengthy service history. Medic 622 is a 2016
Ford/Osage and Medic 624 is a 2020 Ford/Osage.
A new ambulance (Ford/Osage) was ordered in January of 2023 with a delivery date in September of
2025. As part of that purchase, we were trading in the 2006 ambulance. This would leave us with a
2016, 2020 and 2025 Ford/Osage ambulances.
In keeping our fleet up to date and being fiscally responsible we chose and budgeted to purchase a
2025 Super Cab 4x4 Ford F450 Chassis and have the box from the 2016 ambulance rebuilt and
mounted on the new chassis. This purchase meets the criteria for a sole source purchase as it
maintains warranties on the re -mounted box by using the original box manufacturer and keeps our
fleet consistent and standardized.
Also, Sawtooth Emergency Vehicles will allow us to keep the 2006 trade in ambulance until the
completion of the re -chassis of this new ambulance: an approximate build time of two to three
months.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Approve the purchase for a (1) New 2025 Ford F-450 4x4 Super Cab
and Osage Ambulance Body remount to Sawtooth Emergency Vehicles/Balcer Ambulance Sales.
FISCAL EFFECTS: $205,500 was budgeted for this new chassis and box rebuild/remount in this
FY 24/25 budget authorized August 19, 2024, by City Council. The updated cost is $212,700 and
can be funded from the levy capital fund. This was budgeted for in our Emergency Responder levy
for FY24/25.
