Subject: EXTERNAL Cruise Night work session
I'm unable to attend the meeting in person, but wanted to express my perspective as a resident of
Kalispell living two blocks off Main Street. We've been in our current residence since 2010. For the first
decade of our time here, if people were cruising Main Street, we were not aware of it. It's only since the
pandemic that Cruise Night has been audibly apparent from our house, even if we're inside with the
windows closed.
I have no problem with people slowly and calmly driving Main Street for fun. If no one is revvingtheir
engines to the point that they're disturbing the neighborhood, peeling out, racing, or otherwise infringing
on their fellow citizens' right to enjoy a safe, reasonable-decibel evening at their homes or downtown
businesses, then I see no problem with it. If your fun doesn't negatively affect anyone else, then more
power to you.
I'd like to raise the question of whether the people in favor of continuing Cruise Night in its current form
would be quite as enamored with it if it were taking place on the roads adjacent to their own homes. I've
never met someone who has said they like nothing better than hearing several hours of loud engine noise
go by their house for several hours in the evening.
I appreciate the city council taking the time to consider this issue. The concerns about Cruise Night are
not about ruining anyone's fun. They are about maintaining a community where we can recognize that
when one person's idea of a good time negatively impacts those around them, we can have a civil
discourse and work towards a meaningful solution.
Thankyou foryour thoughtful work on this issue.
