REPORT TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: James C. Hansz, P.E., Director of Public Works / City
SUBJECT: Wastewater Treatment Plant Preliminary Engineers
MEETING DATE: 28 July 2003
The consultant team of HDR Engineers/Morrison Maierle/Stantec have worked for
several months to draft a preliminary engineering report for expansion of the City's wastewater
treatment plant. There have been numerous technical working sessions with staff and the
consultant team that have dealt with every aspect of the potential expansion. The need to expand
the facility was identified in the recently competed Facility Plan. The overall plan for expansion
will eventually involve virtually every unit process in the facility but not all at the same time.
Therefore, expansion will be approached in a phased manner to reduce cost impacts and to
ensure that extra capacity is brought on line when needed but not before it is needed. The first
phase of expansion will likely begin about mid -decade when plant inflows are expected to
exceed the capacity of the first process element identified as a bottleneck.
The draft report is nearing completion and the consultant team will present a report of
their progress and to advise the Council on the next steps to be taken in this long term effort.
