SUBJECT: Urban Forestry Committee Appointment
BACKGROUND: The purpose of the Kalispell Urban Forestry Committee (previously Street,
Tree Board or Commission) is to study the problems and determine the needs of the City of
Kalispell in connection with its tree planting, protection, maintenance and removal. The
Committee is also tasked with assisting staff, council and the citizens of the city in the
dissemination of news and information regarding the selection, planting and maintenance of trees
within the corporate limits, whether the same be on private or public property, and to make such
recommendations from time to time to the City Council, as to desirable legislation concerning the
tree program and activities for the city.
The Urban Forestry Committee is made up of six members appointed by the Mayor with the
approval of the Council. The Committee currently has one vacancy and one application. The
applicant has been serving on the Committee since 2015 but was not officially reappointed in
2023 due to an oversight.
RECOMMENDATION: Mayor Johnson appoint Tony Nelson to the Urban Forestry
Committee, followed by a motion from Council confirming their approval of the Mayor's
appointments.

Urban forestry has been a passion of mine since childhood. I have served on this
committee for just under 9 years, and have enjoyed the challenges and rewards. I feel
that this is a very hands-on committee that gets a lot done, and I'm proud to be a part of
that work.
Detail any education, knowledge, or experience you have which would be beneficial to this board, committee
or commission:
I have a BS in Forest Resources - Hydrology Emphasis from the University of Minnesota,
and have worked in forest management for 33 years.
