Dear Kalispell city Mayor, and council members.
Final statement from Kalispell city Council, June 3, 2024
It really frustrates me when I get all these people come and give us comment and then they leave and I didn't have the
opportunity to tell them that in the future with what The state has done with laws surrounding zoning. They'll never get
to speak to us again on some things but some things yes and I think that the fact that they don't understand that and all
of a sudden in a few years, they're going to see a subdivision pop up next to them and we're going to be the ones that to
catch the blame.
I believe you were referring to Senate bill 382.
I would like to reference a flathead beacon article dated October 4, 2023 Article title is "Montana land use planning act
makes city planning more inclusive"
The The Montana league of cities and towns state "SB 382 is the fundamental change we need to our statutes. Whether
you are a neighbor,a builder,or a mayor everyone benefits from an updated more predictable and fair land use and
planning process.
Recent opinion pieces have been posited that this new law removes the ability of citizens to participate in the process of
development in their local towns -a position that couldn't be further from the truth. What the law actually does is
increase participation in the process of development while working to eliminate last-minute veto points that are
inconsistent with the established long range plans. This makes the process not only more predictable for those who build
housing, but more importantly, for local residents. The real power of SB 382 comes from its front loading of plan
processes and emphasis on growth policies.
As communities, we have the opportunity to sit down over a few years and plan our growth for the next 20 years. After
that we can be relatively assured that's how our city will grow. No more peacemeal solutions and no more zoning
changes on a case -by -case basis -or at least far fewer than the current status quo. We can have peace of mind that we
know generally how our neighborhoods will change and grow. SB 382 is a win -win solution that empowers the most
marginalized voices voices in our communities,GIVING US ALL A SAY IN HOW WE GROW.
The community has spoken with written and public comments in opposition of Tronstad Meadows and white tail crossing
we have a legitimate petition with over 600 signatures, opposing annexation zone changes and development of this
project.
Please back the community that you serve and vote no on the application in its entirety. .
Respectfully
Brenda Oberlitner
