Flathead Warming Center from Caitlin WebbJudi Funk From: Caitlin Webb <webb.caitlin@gmail.com> Sent: Monday, May 20, 2024 1:07 PM To: Kalispell Meetings Public Comment Subject: EXTERNAL Flathead Warming Center Dear Members of the City Council, I am writing to express my strong support for the Flathead County Warming Center. As a resident of this community, I believe it is our moral obligation to provide assistance and support to those experiencing homelessness, especially during the harsh winter months when the lack of adequate shelter can be life -threatening. Flathead County, like many areas across the country, faces significant challenges related to homelessness. According to Housing and Urban Development data, there were 319 individuals experiencing homelessness in Kalispell in 2022. This represents a troubling reality for our community members who are forced to endure the elements without a safe and warm place to sleep. The homeless warming shelter not only provides immediate relief to those in need but also offers a pathway to stability and support. Research has consistently shown that shelters play a crucial role in addressing the issue of homelessness by providing individuals with access to basic necessities such as food, clothing, and hygiene facilities. Additionally, shelters offer vital services such as case management, mental health support, and substance abuse counseling, which are essential for individuals seeking to transition out of homelessness. Moreover, homeless shelters have been proven to reduce strain on emergency services and healthcare systems by offering a more sustainable and cost-effective solution to homelessness. By providing individuals with a safe place to stay, shelters help prevent exposure -related injuries and illnesses, thereby reducing the need for costly emergency interventions. In addition to the humanitarian benefits, the homeless warming shelter also has positive implications for our community as a whole. By addressing the immediate needs of those experiencing homelessness, we create a safer and more inclusive environment for all residents. Furthermore, by offering support and resources to individuals experiencing homelessness, we can help break the cycle of poverty and improve overall community well-being. I urge you to uphold the Conditional Use Permit for the Flathead Warming Center. Thank you for your attention to this important matter. Sincerely, Caitlin Webb 1 Somers Resident
