MT 24-0023 CTL|THOMPSON, INC. FIRM INFORMATION Business History CTL|Thompson, Inc. (CTL|T) is an engineering consulting firm offering geotechnical, materials, environmental and structural engineering services, construction observation, soil and materials testing, and forensic engineering. We provide these services throughout Montana, Colorado, and Wyoming. As a firm, we have completed more than 100,000 projects over the past 50+ years. Our projects range from major infrastructure systems in both the private and public sectors to single-family dwellings. The result of the 1977 merger of Robert W. Thompson, Inc., established in 1971, and Commercial Testing Laboratories, established in 1947, CTL|T is headquartered in Denver, where we were founded. The company has grown in capabilities and staff to support client needs since the merger. We now have offices in six cities in Colorado, one in Cheyenne, Wyoming and one in Bozeman, Montana. CTL|Thompson, Inc. has about 250 full-time employees with seasonal variation. Approximately 180 of these individuals are professional or technical. Our staff includes Geotechnical, Materials, Environmental and Structural Engineers, Engineering Geologists, and certified environmental professionals. Firm Location Our office in Bozeman, Montana is the location that would be servicing projects for the City of Kalispell. Our Bozeman office was founded in 2019, but we have been performing geotechnical engineering services in the Bozeman/Big Sky area since 2010. Personnel in the Bozeman office consists of three registered, professional engineers and four field technicians with numerous certifications. We are available to meet in- person with personnel from the Public Works Department as requested during performance of a contracted project with about 24 hours of notice. Project highlights have included the One and Only Resort (three large hotels, restaurant, ski lodge, gondola terminal, and single-family residences), a new gondola from One and Only to Big Sky Resort, a wastewater treatment facility, water storage reservoirs, a golf clubhouse, landslide monitoring, and numerous single-family residential developments. Lone Mountain Land Company, Spanish Peaks - Contact: Jon Olsen, P.E., VP of Development (406-539-7311) - Description of Services: We have provided geotechnical engineering services and construction observation and materials testing (COMT) services for more than 20 major commercial and residential projects in the Spanish Peaks Development at Big Sky, Montana. Projects have included ski lifts, a fire station, water tanks and pump stations, golf course buildings, hotels, and road planning and infrastructure, including a large, 200 foot single-span bridge. MT 24-0023 PREVIOUS PERFORMANCE/EXPERIENCE Geotechnical Evaluations and Materials Testing CTL|T has successfully completed geotechnical evaluation services for the following projects: Lone Peak Tram, Big Sky, MT The Lone Peak Tram at Big Sky Resort was constructed to replace the old tram. The new tram has a 2,100-foot vertical rise with a single support tower. The top terminal is at the edge of the top of Lone Mountain Peak at an elevation of over 11,000 feet. CTL|T provided geotechnical engineering services for design of the upper and lower terminals for the new tram, which included difficult access drilling/rock coring. One and Only Resort, Big Sky, MT The One and Only Resort in Moonlight Basin at Big Sky includes three hotel buildings, a spa building, ski lodge, gondola terminal, about 70 single-family residential buildings, and other various infrastructure such as a restaurant, ski lodge back-of-house building, and retaining walls. Our firm has provided geotechnical engineering services for these structures, slope stability evaluation and mitigation recommendations, retaining wall design, geophysical site surveys to evaluate seismic site class, and ground stabilization recommendations. Gallatin Valley Church, Bozeman, MT The Gallatin Valley Church is a two-story church proposed in Bozeman. We provided geotechnical engineering services for the project, including pavement design for the parking lot. Spanish Peaks Fire Station, Big Sky, MT The Spanish Peaks Fire Station is a two-story fire station proposed within Spanish Peaks at Big Sky, Montana. We provided geotechnical engineering services for the project, including pavement design for the parking lot. Par 3 Clubhouse, Big Sky, MT The Par 3 Clubhouse is a two-story clubhouse for a golf course planned within Spanish Peaks at Big Sky, Montana. We provided geotechnical engineering services for the project, which included installation of inclinometers to monitor potential slope movement of two mapped landslide deposits. Through our monitoring, we were able to recommend more favorable areas to develop with less risk of movement and damage to the building. Montana Division Manager Ryan W. DeMars has been with CTL|Thompson, Inc. since 2017. He began as an Engineering Field Technician in the Denver Division before assisting in establishing the Bozeman Division as a Staff Engineer in 2019. Mr. DeMars is currently the Bozeman Division Manager. He directs subsurface investigations and prepares geotechnical reports for residential, commercial and ski area development projects in the Big Sky and Bozeman area. He provides cost estimation and prepares proposals for construction observation and materials testing and geotechnical engineering investigations. With a wide range of construction observation and materials testing experience, Mr. DeMars also leads and supervises Bozeman’s team of Field Technicians. Project Experience One and Only Resort Development, Moonlight Basin, Big Sky, Montana The project encompasses a development with three hotel buildings, a spa, restaurant, ski lodge, and over 70 residences. Construction began in 2021 and is ongoing. Project services include extensive geotechnical investigation to develop design and construction criteria for the various parts of the project, as well as construction observation and materials testing. She worked as a Staff Engineer at the Denver Division for CTL|T from 2017 to 2020, and returned to the company in April 2022 as a Project Manager. Her time away from CTL|T was spent at another Colorado geotechnical firm with an emphasis in transportation and geohazards. As Project Manager, her responsibilities include preparing scopes of services and fee estimates, maintaining client relationships, performing field investigations, engineering design and analysis, and technical writing of reports. Ms. Safari’s experience includes residential subdivisions, residential/commercial buildings, ski resort infrastructure, roadway embankments, waterway infrastructure, slope stability analysis, and federal/state/local highways and bridges. Her design experience includes ASD and LRFD design methods. She has specialized experience with expansive soils, slope stability and earth retention, and ground improvement techniques. PROJECT EXPERIENCE I-90 Pavement Reconstruction, Lookout Pass, Montana Geotechnical investigation for the reconstruction about 6 miles of I-90 between Taft and Lookout Pass Montana. The project included pavement reconstruction and drainage improvements. Involved work with MDT. Settlement Trail Bridge, Big Sky, Montana Geotechnical Investigation for a 200-foot, single-span, vehicular bridge in Big Sky, Montana. Duties included overseeing rock-coring and engineering analysis to provide LRFD bridge design recommendations, geofoam backfill recommendations, and slope stability analysis. Six Shooter Lift Replacement, Big Sky Resort, Montana Geotechnical investigation for the replacement of the Six Shooter ski lift at Big Sky Resort with the world’s longest 8-chair ski lift. Duties included performing geotechnical drilling, and engineering analysis to provide design and construction recommendations for the lift. MT 24-0023 JAMES D. KELLOGG, P.E. Principal Engineer James D. Kellogg is a principal engineer for the Glenwood Springs, CO and the Bozeman, MT offices. He is responsible for technical design and review, client development, and expansion of markets. Mr. Kellogg established the Bozeman Division in 2019 and has worked to develop clientele and expand services. He also worked as the lead hydrographer and augmentation plan coordinator for the Division 5 office of the Colorado Division of Water Resources from December 2006 through August 2015. Mr. Kellogg has diverse professional experience. His geotechnical engineering experience includes slope stability analysis, mudflow analysis, excavation retention, dewatering systems, underpinning, expansive and consolidating soils. He also has experience in water resource engineering including hydrography, satellite monitoring, augmentation plan administration, water use accounting, and select dam safety tasks. Geotechnical Engineer for Transit and Parking Plaza in Town of Snowmass Village, Colorado Performed geotechnical engineering investigation and analyses for a proposed transit center, including two parking structures extending as deep as 25 feet below-grade on a mountain slope. This included exploratory drilling and slope stability analysis to develop design and construction criteria for the project. Crested Butte, Colorado This project involved developing recommendations for dewatering, excavation retainage, and foundations for a multi-story lodge with below grade parking levels at base of a ski area. The project site presented significant ground water flows and caving spoils present. Geotechnical Engineer for Vail Valley Medical Center Addition in Vail, Colorado This project involved the demolition and renovation of central part of hospital facility. This project included geotechnical recommendations for new column pads to support additional upper levels; provided consultation for jet grouting operations to increase capacity to existing column pads. Geotechnical Engineer for Vail Town Center in Vail, Colorado The project included the demolition of existing parking structure and construction of new parking structure with several levels of below-grade parking and commercial facilities on upper deck. This involved the evaluation of soil and ground water conditions to provide the assessment of required dewatering and excavation retention systems; additionally, the project required specialized drilling techniques to advance borings. Geotechnical Engineer for Dancing Bear Lodge in Aspen, Colorado This project involved a four-story building with three below-grade levels planned adjacent to other buildings and infrastructure. The primary geotechnical concern was excavation retention systems. This included developing recommendations for temporary and permanent retention concepts. MT 24-0023 WILLIAM (RANDLE) COLLINS Senior Engineering Technician Randle Collins is a Senior Engineering Technician in our Bozeman, Montana office. Mr. Collins has been with CTL|Thompson since 2015. Randle spent over 8 years as a technician based in Denver, Colorado and moved to our Bozeman office in 2023. He specializes in observation and testing of soils but also performs a variety of inspections and observations including observation of reinforcing steel, concrete testing, and masonry inspections. He has worked on a variety of commercial, residential, and industrial projects. Mr. Collins is also proficient at performing field investigations, including directing the drilling of exploratory borings and excavation of exploratory pits. He is skilled in logging subsurface conditions encountered during subsurface investigations. Mr. Bartecki is capable of performing a variety of inspections and observations including observation and density testing of soils, observation of reinforcing steel, and concrete testing. He has worked on a variety of commercial and residential projects. Mr. Barteck is specialized in post- tensioning inspections. He has great communication skills and can easily communicate with contractors on a job site to help find quick, practical solutions.
