Runoff is currently conveyed through an open channel and ponds at an undersized road crossing, impacting nearby residences. The newly designed system includes a concrete inlet transition structure and debris rack to transition from an open channel conveyance to buried pipe. The new storm pipe parallels an existing undersized culvert and provides improved capacity to reduce ponding. Morrison-Maierle helped the City secure an ARPA grant to help fund design and construction. Stormwater Operations Facility Planning – Missoula, MTMorrison-Maierle prepared a stormwater and Operations Facility Planning document for the City of Missoula that analyzed the operational needs for the startup of their stormwater utility and provided a capital improvement plan for critical stormwater infrastructure. Key components of the facility plan included: ◘Identify existing codes and rules related to the stormwater utility◘Inventory of the existing stormwater system◘Assessment of levee system◘Evaluate management practices to determine stormwater utility staffing and equipment Our team is currently preparing a supplemental planning document, the Comprehensive Stormwater Quality Plan. This planning effort delineates 33 basins for priority outfalls, identifies system wide runoff coefficients, models using Sewer GEMS for a 9700 acre basin, develops a capital improvements list and provides system wide water quality improvements. Upper Gharrett Stormwater - Missoula, MTMorrison-Maierle was hired to convert the Upper Gharrett open drainage channel to piped runoff conveyance to reduce the amount of sediment deposition downstream, reduce maintenance for the city, improve public safety, improve storm flow conveyance, prevent loss of sanitary sewer infrastructure, mitigate flooding, and allow the City to meet the MS4 permit requirements. Access limitations and steep terrain offered unique design challenges. This project involved significant coordination with adjacent landowners to obtain access and permanent easements. Ultimately, the final design isolated and separated stormwater flows into an underground piped network while maintaining baseflows in a constructed swale to replicate pre-development conditions. Caras Outfall Stormwater Pretreatment System - Missoula, MTMorrison-Maierle assisted the City of Missoula with securing funds and completing the design for this stormwater treatment project. The approximately 60-acre urban drainage basin catches runoff from downtown Missoula through storm conveyance and discharged directly into the Clark Fork River. Phase 1, completed in 2017, aimed to reduce pollutants, sediment, and debris from entering the river via a hydrodynamic separator unit (HDS). Phase 2 included the construction of an infiltration gallery to further treat stormwater. The gallery consisted of buried perforated corrugated metal pipes that allow water to slowly seep into the ground instead of discharging directly into the Clark Fork River. The infiltration gallery has capacity to hold the first 0.5 inches of runoff from the downtown Missoula drainage basin, which carries most contaminants. Construction occurred in a high-use, high-visibility location in Caras Park and was completed in the Spring of 2022. Construction was carefully coordinated with safety, event planning, and pedestrian traffic in mind. Our integrated approach to design ensures that electrical functions are considered early in the design process, which helps us anticipate user needs. Reliable delivery and treatment of water and wastewater, or industrial processes require careful consideration. Morrison-Maierle proactively incorporates all of the elements required for a smooth construction process, including elements like instrumentation and controls, hazardous location requirements, and even the design of medium-voltage systems. We have extensive experience with these types of projects and an in-depth knowledge of what is required to successfully complete them. Design and construction phasing play a large part ensuring existing systems are functioning while the new projects are being constructed. Medium-voltage distribution is often encountered for large electrical loads and equipment that is located at a considerable distance from the source of power. E-House design provides some projects with a “plug & play” approach for electrical distribution on remotely located projects, or projects requiring modularity and potential relocation in the future.
