Public Comment on Warming Center discussion from Colton LittleDear City Council Members and Kalispell Community,
I am writing to urge caution and thoughtful consideration regarding the ongoing discussion surrounding the potential revocation of the permit for the Flathead Warming Center. As a concerned
member of the community, I believe it is crucial to approach this issue with empathy, collaboration, and a commitment to finding sustainable solutions that benefit all residents.
While I understand the concerns raised by some regarding the potential adverse impacts of the Warming Center on the surrounding neighborhood, I firmly believe that revoking the permit
would only exacerbate these issues rather than resolve them. It is important to recognize the vital role that the Warming Center plays in providing safety and support to individuals
experiencing homelessness in our community. For many of these individuals, the center serves as a lifeline, offering access to essential resources and the opportunity to work with social
workers to improve their lives.
Furthermore, it is evident that homelessness is a complex issue with deep-rooted causes that cannot be addressed adequately by shutting down a shelter. As the Kalispell Police Chief
has warned, the issues we are facing are a result of these underlying root causes, and simply revoking the permit would not address these fundamental issues.
Instead of resorting to a "quick fix" solution that may harm those most in need, I urge the City Council to prioritize collaborative dialogue and community engagement. By bringing together
community members from across the valley, we can work towards holistic solutions that address the root causes of homelessness and benefit all residents.
It is essential to recognize that the Flathead Warming Center plays a critical role in providing safety and support to individuals experiencing homelessness in our community. By offering
essential resources and access to social workers, the center serves as a vital lifeline for those in need. Revoking the permit would deprive many community members of a safe refuge
and hinder their ability to improve their lives.
In conclusion, I ask the City Council to refrain from revoking the permit for the Flathead Warming Center and instead focus on fostering collaborative efforts to address homelessness
in our community. Together, we can find solutions that benefit all residents and create a safer community for everyone.
Thank you for considering my perspective.
Sincerely,
Colton Little
