Highlights of monthly activity for the operating divisions of the Public Works
Department for the month of May 2003 are as follows:
ENGINEERING DIVISION
• Continued support of utility engineering coordination process, met with other utilities to
review design issues for Highway 93 and Meridian.
• Continued development of utility rate study and review of system development charges.
• Resumed construction and coordination for Downtown Streetscape Project. Contractor
completed installations on First Avenue East and opened street to traffic. Chipseal of
surface will be done following completion of First Avenue West.
• Continued preparation of WWTP PER, conducted a technical review meeting with
consultant team.
• Continued preparation of FY 2004 budget.
• Completed design and received bids for Sewer/Street Maintenance Building.
• Completed design and received bids for 2003 Pavement Striping Project.
• Completed design and received bids for annual Chipseal Project.
• Completed design and received bids for Jr. High School Water Main Project.
• Met with Director of County Landfill to discuss potential disposal of WWTP sludge in
the event that Glacier Gold is no longer a viable option.
• Office staff, street superintendent, and working foremen briefed on liability issues by the
legal department.
• Continued providing input on public works matters brought before the Site Development
Review Committee.
• Submitted a request for engineering design services for the replacement of the Highway
93/Grandview Drive sewage lift station from qualified engineering firms.
• Provided input to the Flathead County Hazard Assessment/Emergency Response
Subcommittee.
ENGINEERING DIVISION Con't
• Finished GPS field survey data accumulation (19 sections) for base map area expansion.
Processed data and submitted to Horizons for photogrammetric mapping. Continue to
work with Horizons on mapping detail.
• Begin perpetuation/remonumentation of ten PLSS corners surveyed during map
preparation which were of poor quality or lost.
• Begin assessing practicality of using cell phones for GPS unit communication in
conducting utility update surveys.
• Begin conducting this year's utility update surveys using either RTK (cell phones) or
Kinematic GPS modes.
OFFICE AND STAFF

121 repair orders were completed during the month of May:

• Continued regular maintenance of City vehicles and machinery.
• Responded to numerous road calls.
• Repair emergency lights wiring on ambulance.
• Replace seat belt in Police car.
• Fabricate mounts and install weed whip on Kubota tractor.
• Replace steering arm on Police car and Street's flatbed.
• Repair window switch and lights on Police car.
• Repair burned wiring on Park's car.
• Repair strobe light on Street's truck.
• Fabricate mounting brackets and modify newer water truck to work as flush truck.
• Replace front wheel bearing, rotor and front brake pads on Street's truck.
• Replace heater core and oil- fouled spark plug on Park's pickup.
• Replace sweeper control console and overlay on Elgin sweeper.
• Replace front rotors and brake pads on ambulance. Repair warning beacon on Water
Department backhoe.
SANITARYISTORMSEWER DIVISON
• Continued video and jet cleaning of sewer lines Monday through Thursday.
• Performed weekly maintenance of sixteen lift stations each Friday.
• Held weekly safety meetings.
SOLID WASTE DIVISION
• Delivered 16 containers to new customers: 1— 90 gallon, 11 - 100 gallon, 0 - 400 gallon,
4 - 300 gallon.
• Continued weekly garbage service and alley cleanup.
• We repaired 2 — 90 gallon, 3 — 300 gallon and 2 - 400 gallon containers and responded to
5 violations.
• Continuing light pruning in City alleys and cleanup.
• Warranty work being done on #317.
• Held weekly safety meetings.
STREET DIVISION
• General operations and maintenance of City streets and alleys.
• Various cold mix patching on City streets, alleys, and hydrants.
• Sweeping of City streets ongoing.
• Water Department Utility Digs — 7th Ave W, 500-600 Block; 8th Ave W, 1100 Block and
700 Block; 92 Grandview Lane; 800 Block 2°a Ave E; 1600 Block 8th Ave E; Utility Dig
and Fire Hydrant College Ave.
• Paint bollards
• Removed signs from 00 Block on 1st Ave E for contractor on "Streetscape".
• Barricaded and signed for sewer line cleaning Sunset and Wyoming.
• Replaced knocked down stop sign at 4th Ave E and 1 Oth Street E.
• Installed two hour parking signs in 200 Block of 2"d Ave W for "Streetscape".
• Stored the last Luminaires from lst Ave E, 00 Block at the City yard for reuse by Parks
Department.
• Annual spring cleanup.
• Had a fire in the truck that they dump at fairgrounds.
• Held weekly safety meetings.
WATER DIVISION
WATER PRODUCTION & STORAGE:
• Produced 97 M gallons of water: 24 M gallons upper zone and 73 M gallons lower zone.
• Injected 230 gallons of sodium hypochlorite, 12% solution to maintain an average
chlorine residual of 0.29 PPM throughout the system.
• Continued daily monitoring of all pump stations and routine maintenance on all pumps,
motors, chlorination equipment, analyzers, grounds, buildings, controls, testing, water
sampling, and record keeping.
• Installed auto gate opener at Noffsinger Spring Pump Station.
• Repaired 18" valve on Noffsinger water main.
• Installed pump lubricator drain line at Buffalo Well Pump.
• Repaired trap door at Noffsinger.
• Installed exhaust fans at Noffsinger.
• Connected air intake, fuel system, batteries, exhaust system for Noffsinger generator.
• Labeled switch gear at Buffalo Pump House.
• Took annual/quarterly/monthly required water samples (VOC, IOC, SOC, nitrate, nitrite,
TOC and disinfection by products THMM and HAA53).
• Organized and set up annual sampling schedule for required and unregulated samples,
2003.
• Worked on irrigation system and landscaping at Buffalo Hill Pump Station.
• Performed annual maintenance on generators.
WATER CONSTRUCTION AND SYSTEM REPAIR:
• Tagged 81 delinquent accounts on the West Side of Kalispell.
• Completed 106 work orders during the month May.
• Continue to work on meter replacement and breaking down old meters.
• Continue to fill fire hydrants and cut asphalt for new fire hydrants.
• Repaired 14" gate valve at 4th Avenue EN & Montana Street.
• 9-1" water taps completed on Bismark and Denver.
• Repaired 12" valve at 305 — 4th Avenue E.
• Located curb stops NW area for new sidewalk.
• Held weekly safety meetings.
TRAFFIC SIGNS & SIGNALS DIVISON
• Continued regular maintenance of signals, signs, luminaires, barricades, sight
obstructions, and Airport lighting.
• Finished signing 2nd Avenue West & 1st Avenue East for 2 hour parking
• Delivered and picked up all signs and candles for car event at Washington Park.
• Delivered Type II Barricades to Depot Park for Artists & Craftsmen Event and for Art in
the Park.
• Installed two windows in TSS office at City Compound.
• Striped City Hall parking lot and painted handicapped space.
• Set out barricades and signs for police demonstration at High School and closed off area.
• Moved signs and painted curbs at 2nd Ave W and 6th Street W (Friendship House) to
extend yellow curbs to help bus pick up.
• Weekly safety meetings held.
WASTEWATER TREATMENT DIVISION
• 143 Work orders were completed during the month of May.
• 458 Lab tests were performed during the month of May.
• 21 Loads of sludge were hauled during May.
• 121,680_pounds of bio-solids were pressed.
• Permit Report for May 2003. There were no permit violations. The total flow was 77.9
million gallons; the average daily flow was 2.6 million gallons, with a peak flow of 2.8
million gallons._
