Sands/Kalispell City Airport
Council:
I have lived in the Flathead all my life, and in and around Kalispell
for the last 37 years. I have operated my business in this city for the
last 25 years. The Kalispell City Airport has always been an anchor for
the aviation and business community, whether it be instruction, aircraft
maintenance, young eagles programs, charter services, business
convenience, or just a friendly chat and being able to visit a local
restaurant or motel without having to rent a car. The airport has
consistently maintained itself through the 6 cents a gallon tax on fuel
and the leases on the buildings, hangers, land, and fuel system. It is
running in the black, and there is no reason to suspect otherwise in the
future. It has not been, nor is it now a burden on the taxpayer. I see
no taxes that are paid on my tax notice for my office within the city
limits for the use or maintenance of the City Airport. It pays its own
way. The few vocal people who don’t like the airport seem to raise
their voices every 7 to 10 years, and this is another of those cycles.
I hope you can see past their hidden agendas and selfishness.
I urge you to support this asset to the City through your cooperative
efforts with the local businesses, and airport users. The City DOES
benefit by the location of the airport. Moving it is not practical, nor
financially feasible. It needs to be re-aligned, with the money already
dedicated by the FAA, and previous actions of the City. Letting it
slowly grow and continue to be a vital asset to the community is your
wise decision. It brings attraction to the city in a positive way, and
should be allowed to continue to serve as a solid economic anchor in the
community. Please stand behind the airport.
Thank you,
Tom Sands, P.L.S.
