Homeless Situation Public Comment from David HedemanDear Mayor Johnson --- I understand that soon there will be a meeting of Kalispell, Columbia Falls and Whitefish cities to discuss the homeless situation in the Valley. It's a good idea.
I fear the problem is getting worse. Just look at what has happened so far:
1) The organizations that have used the building in Depot Park have or will be moving out due to the homeless inhabiting Depot Park.
2) Locals and visitors are reluctant to use the park because of the homeless waste, garbage and drug stuff left there.
3) The Parkline Trail is a great addition to the community, but people are reluctant to use it for fear of encountering homeless people. Refer to the letter that appeared in the Interlake
a few weeks ago where on three occasions a young mother and child were confronted by homeless people. By the way, locals have given the Parkline Trail a nickname: The Hobo Highway.
People sleeping on the benches or camped out under a tree by the Trail is a big negative for Trail use.
4) Local businesses have or will hire a private security company to protect their businesses from damage by the homeless and from scaring away their customers.
5) A local church has cautioned their members to not let their children use the bathroom facilities unaccompanied due to possible encounters with homeless people in the facility. Another
church feels the need for armed security within the congregation.
6) I have heard rumors that the Warming Center is having trouble finding volunteers to work there because of the people staying there. Yes,it is just a rumor, but I wouldn't be surprised.
It is not fair to criticize and not offer any suggestions. So, what is a possible answer: time for some tough love. Don't increase any services. That's like issuing an invitation for
more homeless people to come here. It is a given that the more services provided, the more homeless, the larger the problem. Instead, cut services. Let the homeless move on to "greener
pastures". With no incentives to stay they will leave. Bottom line, whatever you do, don't increase any services. Cut services !
Sincerely,
D. R. Hedeman
