Equalization Basin Expansion
and Fermenter Rehabilitation,
October 20, 2023
Through a 2019 Facility Plan
for the Kalispell Advanced
Wastewater Treatment Plant
(AWWTP), expansion of the
equalization (EQ) basin capacity
and rehabilitation of the fermen-
ter were identified as needed
improvements. The fermenter
is a key element in the removal
of phosphorus in Kalispell's
biological nutrient removal
process. A comprehensive
condition assessment conducted
on the fermenter in July of 2021
identified significant degradation
of the concrete wall and floor
of the fermenter. The existing
EQ Basin was determined
to have a deficit of Z40,000
gallonsfor semvirtg c€ tr4it And .
projected flows. Attenuation
of incoming loads and flows in
the EQ Basin though adequate
volume promotes consistent and
reliable AWWTP performance.
The proposed project includes
construction of a new 75-foot
diameter EQ Basin with 395,000
gallons of volume and major re-
habilitation of the fermenter tank
and components. The EQ Basin
will be repurposed later as a
primary clarifier. These proposed
improvements will extend the
life of Kalispell's AWWTP and
support high -quality wastewater
treatment to meet strict Montana
Pollutant Discharge Elimination
System (MPDES) permit limits,
thereby protecting state waters
and public health.
