Flathead Warming Center Update Public CommentHello Kalispell City Council! Things are very busy and going well inside the Flathead Warming Center. I want to update you. We are almost a month into this season. The bad news is that when the weather changed, we filled up and already are turning away individuals each night. The good news is... Our Roadmaps out of Homelessness are going really well. What a blessing to have been able to hire the professional staff needed to be so comprehensive and to provide an extra layer of accountability. Just to remind you, for a guest to stay beyond seven nights of emergency shelter, they must meet one on one with our social worker and peer specialist to complete a deeper assessment and then to engage in designing a personalized RoadMap out of homelessness. And then, the individual must meet again every additional seven nights as we support and provide accountability. Personalized Roadmap steps out of homelessness often begin with the resources that we bring into the Warming Center such as ensuring that a person's medicaid is current, getting an ID voucher, appointments with a mental health therapist, having wounds addressed, and appointments made with an onsite Greater Valley Health navigator. We have already seen 12 individuals move onto some form of housing! This is early movement and the only credit we think we can possibly take is the fire of accountability we are now able to offer. I am also excited to share with you about our new initiative to "change the circle and break the cycle". Let me explain... In addiction especially, You have to change your circle to change your life and you have to change your life to break the cycle of addiction. With no other choice, local individuals had been dumped back into homelessness after inpatient drug and alcohol treatment. There is no hope in that scenario! Here is what we are doing about it! After discharge from treatment, we have taken those who are serious in their continued sobriety in to stay with us around the clock, under a very strict plan of continued sobriety. (We had one individual who, after treatment, was not serious and was playing games. We are no longer serving this individual at all) Those in our new program have to immediately get a job, a bank account, and show us the amount of money they are saving and start the process to apply for housing. They have to attend our onsite recovery group and attend outpatient intensive treatment 3 x per week. They also are giving back to shelter life by cleaning, organizing, welcoming in new guests and supply donations. They are not allowed to hang out with any of our other guests, actually there is no hanging out period. Currently, we have two in this new program and they are employed full time at a local restaurant.. These two faces you had probably previously seen in Depot Park. AND, they are doing FANTASTIC! I am impressed with how serious they are and how very grateful they are too! I wish we could do something similar with those who are mentally ill! Today, we have another guy joining us in this new program until his bed date for treatment on Monday. He has been cleared medically and we are keeping him with us to support him in his sobriety until his bed opens up on Monday. Finally, we are partnering with Detention Center staff to meet with homeless individuals inside the jail. We will be providing our assessment and where appropriate, we are creating the individual's Roadmap. But most importantly, we will be working to get individuals signed up for resources/ programs and in some cases to get appointments on the books. When a person gets out of jail, this process could take a couple of months. Let's get individuals rolling on a better future when they are hopefully at "their bottom", in jail! If it is an individual that we have a relationship with, we can try to encourage them to take their medications in jail. This is very important stuff! We continue to do what we can to be a part of the solution in our community. Our new initiatives require us to pay for staffing to be present even when we are closed to overnight emergency shelter. Our Board found a way to squeeze the budget to make it happen! Thank you for taking a moment to read an update! Please keep the Warming Center in your prayers. This really is hard work and we have amazing staff!
