Hines/City Airport commentsDear Council Members,
When I was 14, I developed a passion for flying. With everything I could
earn by mowing lawns and such, I was able to take a one hour flying
lesson, just once each month. With the airport in the city of Oxnard,
CA, I was able to ride my bicycle less than two miles to the airport. By
the age of 18, I earned my pilot license at that airport. I had dreamed
of exploring new places by flying here or there. But, one of the
logistics to overcome was ground transportation. Unlike the Oxnard
airport, It seemed that many airports were far out from stores, food,
and lodging. So, I must say that Kalispell has a real jewel right here
being within walking distance of stores, food and lodging. Please
consider that this would be a great loss to the city if the airport were
closed or moved out of town.
Another thing I would like to say, is that in 1978, I had purchased an
aeronautical chart to help me choose where I wanted to live. I had my
dream of Montana before I ever set foot here. Finally, 13 years later,
in 1991, I was able to make that move and never looked back. I just
knew I belonged in Montana. I still have that 1978 chart and it
definitely shows the airport being there. I have recently learned that
it has, in fact been there since 1929. So, I must say that anyone who
owns property around the airport surely must have been aware of the
airport presence, and therefore, have absolutely no justification to
complain about airport area noise, or danger!
For those only concerned with their property values, then closing or
moving the airport would have a negative value because jobs would be
lost. We all now know how jobs or lack of jobs affect the housing
market... Where I live, I don't really care what the market does
because I plan to stay. Market value is really only a concern for those
who want to leave...
I avoid large airports such as Glacier International. The only purpose
to stop there would be for fuel or for making connections for a
commercial flight. If I desired to visit Kalispell, and if Glacier
airport was the only option, then I would rather not go. It is not a
substitute for your wonderful city airport! Please ignore unreasonable
wining or closure demands. Consider rationally and keep the airport as
it is or upgrade as necessary for compliance issues. But, please do not
close or move the airport.
Best Regards,
Mike Hines
