Boats on city streets Public Comment from Jan McCutchinDear Mayor Johnson and Kalispell City Council Members, I am writing out of frustration about an eyesore and hazard in Kalispell - boats that are parked on the city streets. It not only looks bad (when it is not temporary), but current city rules are that boats can remain on the street permanently, if hitched to a vehicle. I was told by the Police Dept. that as long as it is hitched and moved, even a foot every few days, it is legal. This is not right. (He endorsed that and suggested I write to you). The city now has two-way traffic on narrow streets with cars parked on on both sides. A large boat connected to a large truck creates a view obstruction, as well as making backing out of driveways dangerous. A boat in a driveway is okay, but parked in the yard, or on the street indefinitely, is not. The Council and our citizens are working hard to make Kalispell a beautiful city. Changing the code to eliminate this problem would help. A boat that is parked temporarily on the street is a different situation. But the rule of moving it, just one foot, does nothing to address those using our city streets as a marina parking lot. Particularly in our historic neighborhood. I urge you to consider making a code change for Kalispell’s safety and aesthetics. Thank you, Jan K. McCutchin Kalispell, Montana 214-679-9100
