Box 1997, 201 First Avenue East ALISPELL Kalispell, Montana, 59903 www.kalispell.com REPORT TO: Doug Russell, City Manager FROM: Aimee Brunckhorst, CMC, City Clerk & Communications Manager SUBJECT: Appointment to the Downtown Business Improvement District Board MEETING DATE: August 7, 2023 BACKGROUND: A new Kalispell Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) was created by Council on April 3, 2017, as the old BID was expiring. According to Montana Code Annotated 7-12-1121, a seven -member Board of Trustees made up of property owners within the district or their assignees was appointed with approval of the governing body with four-year staggered terms. The purpose of the BID is to accomplish its vision of creating a vibrant and dynamic business improvement district by: • Building effective partnerships with businesses, institutions, property owners and city government to maintain a clean and safe community. • Attracting, retaining and promoting quality businesses and retail segments to support our local economy. • Promoting Kalispell as a renowned destination point with a business, retail, entertainment, and institutional mix offering unique products, services, and events. • Promoting Kalispell as the preferred place to shop, work, learn and live. Due to the recent resignation of BID member Pam Mower, the BID currently has one vacancy on the board. One qualified applicant has applied. RECOMMENDATION: Mayor Johnson offer a recommendation to appoint George Giavasis to the Downtown Business Improvement District with a term expiring April 30, 2024. Council can then follow with a motion to accept the recommendation and confirm the appointment or offer an alternative. As the opportunity for kalispell to thrive presents itself, I would like to see the city further capitalize on it's unique strengths to reach it's full potential. My family and my businesses are invested in Kalispell's success. Detail any education, knowledge, or experience you have which would be beneficial to this board, committee or commission: I sat on the Kalispell planning board for 5 years. Icurrentlysitonthe Parking Advisory Board. I believe my work on both boards has been cooperative and beneficial to Kalispell and it's residents and businesses. I also sat on the Kalispell Trail Crew Committee and worked closely with the Parkline development (My agency named and branded the trail). I am a downtown resident, business owner, and property owner. I have years of experience and training in design, and communication. I have worked closely with countless local organizations, businesses, nonprofits, and individuals, giving me an understanding ofconcerns that ahuge variety stakeholders have. An additional result of my work is that a I have established a healthy network of partners and allies across our fine valley.
