Doug,
After reading the letter from the three commissioners regarding homelessness; I am horrified. I don't see the homeless
as the enemy and they are the most vulnerable of our citizens. I trust before any city ordinance is crafted an opportunity
or an invitation for the community (hospital, churches, chamber, warming center, downtown businesses, police etc) to
come together and provide some listening sessions for council is in order. I know our city has gifted grant writers and
any funding or just city support for the current warming center and social mental health services would be a good
consideration to couple with an ordinance. We have all seen an uptick in the homeless in the downtown area and
downtown businesses have been dealing with this problem. No one wants to see our new Parkline Trail turned into a
Mecca for the homeless or our parks overrun by the homeless and this is why the complex problem must have a
community approach. I also want to say the downtown corridor is a business retail corridor; that said we will (even with
the welcome hotel/parking building/apartment development) be atleast 100 parking spaces short. I bring this up as We
have an aging population they do come downtown to shop and do business so we need to always be mindful of
providing and not taking away resources from them either.
Kindly share this email with the city council members.
