Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this important document. It's important to remember that every trip
likely begins and ends with a pedestrian component. Also, even drivers who may never use a sidewalk should recognize
the vital role sidewalks play in keeping our community safe. We encourage the City Council to make these facilities a
priority and ensure that they meet ADA requirements.
Table 9.2 estimates the cost of sidewalks inaccurately. The Table assumes sidewalks to be 4' wide, which does not meet
City Standards for local streets (5') much less for Arterial and Collector type streets in State rights of way (8').
This same table estimates the cost per square foot of sidewalk to be $3.75. Recent City contracts for sidewalks were
$9.50/sf. This cost will be higher if it crosses a driveway.
Together, the cost estimates will be significantly higher.
Another key factor that seems missing is the lack of ADA discussion. ADA needs to be a central element of a discussion
of pedestrian facilities in rights of way.
Thank you for your consideration.
