Subject: EXTERNAL Fairbridge Issue
I know that many opinions have been given on this issue, but as a resident that lives not far from the hotel buildings in
question, I felt it was good to weigh in.
My heart hurts for the people that have been renting from the Fairbridge Hotel, which has in my opinion, been little
more than an operation that has taken advantage of desperate people, and not been kept up well. It feels like with the
broken down parking lot, condemned buildings and others that I think should have been addressed by the health
department for hazards, it is about time something is done about it. We need more housing in this community, but safe
housing. Keeping people in unsafe conditions does not help anyone. It is very hard to renovate right now, and some of
those places need to be completely gutted or torn down to deal with the issues in them. Turning it into a nice
apartment building with convention center will add more housing for the community, that is safe, but also raise the
value of the homes located in close proximity, which is very close to the historical Eastside of Kalispell, which is
something we do want to make sure is maintained without having broken down buildings neglected by their owners,
and no maintenance is being done.
I do think the city council should be supportive of the efforts of Samaritan House in providing safe housing options for
them, supporting ADU units being built on properties large enough to support them in Kalispell, and supporting more
apartment buildings being built in the future. We need to support the judges cracking down on tenants that are using
the system to cheat and steal from honest landlords, which makes them sell their properties causing more of a rental
shortage as well.
I appreciate your time and your consideration.
