Transportation Plan Public Comment from Patrick MaloneAimee Brunckhorst From: Pat Malone <pcmwccc@hotmail.com> Sent: Monday, August 16, 2021 9:49 AM To: Kalispell Meetings Public Comment Subject: EXTERNAL Move 2040 Transportation Plan [NOTICE: This message includes an attachment -- DO NOT CLICK on links or open attachments unless you know the content is safe.] Dear Mayor Johnson and City Council. We all know growth is inevitable and that the Flathead is now one of the fastest growing rural counties in the US and that we'll likely see unprecedented growth over the next couple decades. How we plan for that growth and its associated impacts will continue to shape not only the quality of life we enjoy, but also our public safety (transportation, air quality, etc.) and our pocketbooks (as uncontrolled growth can cost 10+ times more than planned growth in the long - run). Your decisions on the Move 2040 Plan will have a huge influence on how our region experiences this growth, for us residents and also our tourism base. In light of that I'd ask that you please rework the Draft Move 2040 Kalispell Area Transportation Plan to fully support revitalizing Main Street and the Downtown Plan instead of making Downtown Kalispell a thoroughfare for yet more traffic. Please also give greater priority in and around Kalispell to providing infrastructure for alternative forms of transportation -- walking, biking, ride sharing, and bus service as a way to decrease automobile congestion. As a family, we are as dependent as anyone on our use of the automobile, but much prefer and make personal and economic choices based upon using alternative means (preferably the bike). As COVID-19 has taught us, exercise and activities in open spaces will likely continue to be a growing lifestyle trend. I encourage you to adopt plan policies and funding mechanisms that promote a more diverse and healthy lifestyle for residents and a more vibrant and interesting streetscape for local businesses.
