Box 1997, 201 First Avenue East ALISPELL Kalispell, Montana, 59903 www.kalispell.com REPORT TO: Doug Russell, City Manager FROM: Aimee Brunckhorst, CMC, City Clerk & Communications Manager SUBJECT: Appointment to the Downtown Business Improvement District Board MEETING DATE: May 17, 2021 BACKGROUND: A new Kalispell Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) was created by Council on April 3, 2017 as the old BID was expiring. According to Montana Code Annotated 7-12-1121, a seven -member Board of Trustees made up of property owners within the district or their assignees was appointed with approval of the governing body with four-year staggered terms. The purpose of the BID is to accomplish its vision of creating a vibrant and dynamic business improvement district by: • Building effective partnerships with businesses, institutions, property owners and city government to maintain a clean and safe community. • Attracting, retaining and promoting quality businesses and retail segments to support our local economy. • Promoting Kalispell as a renowned destination point with a business, retail, entertainment, and institutional mix offering unique products, services, and events. • Promoting Kalispell as the preferred place to shop, work, learn and live. Due to the recent resignation of BID member Curtis Bartel, the BID currently has one vacancy on the board. Two qualified applicants have been received. RECOMMENDATION: Mayor Johnson offer a recommendation to appoint one applicant to the Downtown Business Improvement District with a term expiring April 30, 2024. Council can then follow with a motion to accept the recommendation and confirm the appointment or offer an alternative. While I have enjoyed involvement in projects like the Parkline Trail, leveling up our main street entrepreneurs to compete on a national stage, and hosting local events, I would like to further my involvement downtown as a member of the BID to help shape Kalispell as the cultural hub of the valley. Detail any education, knowledge, or experience you have which would be beneficial to this board, committee or commission: Ten years working with local entrepreneurs and non -profits (from start-ups to established businesses/organizations) as a business consultant and branding agency. I help clients connect with potential partners, their audience, and foster business goals that often aid in the betterment of Kalispell. I have a degree in Visual Communication Design and twelve years of experience in the field. I also own commercial office space and a home downtown. I own three commercial properties and two homes in downtown Kalispell. Our residential tenants comprise over 50 individuals, and our commericial properties shelter nearly 20 workers. My passion is the growth and structure of cities, and I'm interested in making a positive impact on Kalispell in open collaboration with other building owners, businesspeople, and stakeholders. Detail any education, knowledge, or experience you have which would be beneficial to this board, committee or commission: I hold a degree in architecture and urban planning from Bryn Mawr College and a Barnes -de Mazia Certificate in public art from the Barnes Foundation. My volunteer and board experience has been focused on contributions to city building and development. In order to move to Montana, I resigned from our local school board's building development committee and from our local Community Emergency Repsonse Team. I've attended two meetings of the Kalispell BID board, and was happy to see several of my acquaintances are already are members. In a strong team, I hope to use my education and experience.
