This natural area is bordered by Lawrence park on the West, Stillwater River on the North, Whitefish Stage on the East and private properties to the South. Being adjacent to Lawrence Park and undevelopable, this made for a natural extension of Lawrence Park for a total of 56 acres. In response to numerous citizen complaints in 2017, of transient activities in the Lawrence Park natural area, Parks and Recreation installed 2,585 feet of nature trail. Installing the trail in this area provided several benefits. The trail allowed access for staff to remove numerous camps and dumpsites while providing public access to a nature trail in an urban setting. This new 2,585 feet of trail was accomplished in partnership with Applied Materials, Montana Conservation Corp. (MCC), Boy Scouts of America and other community volunteers. To augment the trail further signs have been installed informing the public about nature around them along with a map of the trail system. This work was done over a 2-year period with grant funding and volunteers. The trail is used daily and has greatly aided in responding to transient activities within this area for both law enforcement and parks staff. Attached is a map of the original idea for multiple trails throughout this area. Due to funding limitations, the loop closest to the Lawrence Park and the connection to Whitefish Stage are the only sections that were completed as they immediately addressed issues that arose. We are proposing to complete the last proposed section this upcoming fiscal year, FY22. This section would provide more area for people to enjoy nature within an urban environment, add an educational component with additional signage, and possibly look at making this a multi -use path in the future. RECOMMENDATION: Council review and discuss the project and provide staff direction.
