[EXTERNAL] Potential Loss of Downtown ParkingDear Mayor Johnson and Manager Russell.
During a Board meeting today I learned that the City of Kalispell has issued an RFP to sell (for redevelopment I assume) a parking lot at the NW corner of Main Street and 3rd. This lot
is currently mostly long-term, leased parking along with a dozen or so meters. While we're all anxious for further infill development in downtown and throughout the core area the issue
of on-off street parking and an effective parking management program remains.
Currently these development plans will force local employees and at least two businesses to relocate vehicles with very limited options. Parking is already tight and tickets are expensive.
I know staff who pay upwards of $100 per month in fines because their job requires they frequently run errands beyond walking (especially in the winter) and thereby must use short-term,
on street parking. With more commercial space comes more visitors/business activity, more SVO trips and a greater demand for that limited parking.
I'm curious if the RFP requires off-street parking for employees and guests at this location? I'm also curious if the City is yet committed to constructing a multiple-use parking structure
in vicinity of this lot (which has some of the only surface are to do so)?
Please help all who enjoy and utilize downtown Kalispell better understand how short and long-term parking needs are going to be met. Or, should those of us who are business/property
owners with high demand traffic explore moving away from downtown?
Sincerely, Patrick.
