with friends. Many of these kids will be using our sidewalks and streets, both on foot and on bicycles.
The Kalispell Police Department bus already seen numerous vehicle vs. bicycle accidents this summer.
At times, children may lack burns oftheir snnmmdmgs when riding their bikes and make unexpected
maneuvers that put than in the path of yaw vehicle. Any time a bicycle and a vehicle collide the
outcome is not favorable to the cyclist. A large percentage of crashes can be avoided if motorists and
eselists fellow the rules of the road and watch out for each other.
The Kalispell Police Department asks that you take a few minutes and talk with your children about
safety when riding on our .sheets and paths. Be sure and prmvide the with a safe operating bicycle,
bike lobed, bright clothes, and lights if riding after dark. Be sure to also discuss with then the
responsibilities they have when operating a bicycle on cn city streets. Ride in the same direction as
traffic and obey traffic signs and signals. If you are unfamiliar with local and state bicycle laws you
can find the online at Montana Code Amended (MCA) under Title 61, Chapter 8. Part 6, and at the
City of Kalispell website under Municipal Codes (ace Chapter 19 Article 9).
Additionally, as materials, please give cyclists room. To not pass too closely and only pass when it's
safe to move over into an adjacent lane. Take a few seconds when driving to look for bicycles and
motorcycles at intersection. Always stop completely at stop signs and when making a right turn at a
