RE: Letter of Support - Conrad Mansion Museum’s application for the Montana Historic
Preservation Grant
To esteemed Council members:
The Kalispell Chamber of Commerce Convention and Visitor Bureau is pleased to submit this
letter of support for the Conrad Mansion Museum (CMM) Montana Historic Preservation
Grant application. The museum is requesting funds to update the structure’s outdated
electrical wiring. Even today most of the electrical system used in the CMM is from the
original installation in 1895. Upgrading to a safe code-regulated wiring system is critical to
ensure that the mansion can continue with its mission of providing educational tours which it
relies on for operational funding.
In addition to the longevity of the structure and the safety of staff and guests, 90% of the
CMM’s furnishings are original to the Conrad family. It would be a great loss to Kalispell to
lose the house and items that showcase the Conrad family’s legacy and Kalispell’s early years.
With this proposed project, the original 19th century wiring and fixtures will still be on display
inside the Conrad Mansion, albeit disconnected and replaced with modern Montana building
code-regulated wiring, which will be out of view from guests.
This project will allow the Conrad Mansion to continue providing visitors and community
members with an authentic glimpse into 19th century Montana life while adhering to current
fire and safety standards, protecting the City of Kalispell’s investment as well as an important
piece of Kalispell and the Flathead Valley’s history.
