In addition there was eighty-one hours of training in wildland survival, pump testing, truck operations, hazardous material, ladder tower operations. Randy Brodehl Fire Chief City of Kalispell Post Office Box 1997 - Kalispell, Montana 59903-1997 -Telephone (406)758-7700 Fax(406)758-7758 PARKS & RECREATION Activity Report Summer 2002 TO: Chris Kukulski, City Manager Pam Kennedy, Mayor City Council Members FROM: Michael Baker, Parks Director RE: June, July & August Activity Report DATE: August 28, 2002 PARKS & RECREATION HIGHLIGHTS • Bruckhauser pool opened Wednesday June 12ih. • Community Garden - (a cooperative effort with the MCC) opened June 8th. • Picnic In The Park concert series kicked off on June 19`h with 21 concerts scheduled and an expanded 2 hour format. • Day Camp sessions started at Woodland Park on June 17 and will run through August 23`a • Windstorm struck on July 13th with winds of approximately 65 m.p.h., resulting in numerous occurrences of tree branches snapping and the need for pruning, chipping and cleanup. (Cleanup took 3 weeks) • Eagle Scout projects at KYAC — installation of picnic tables and benches and Greenbriar Park — construction of a neighborhood playground. • Spring tree planting of 75 trees. • Parks and Recreation moved to new location at 35 1" Avenue East. Parks Department — Ken Bauska, Foreman Maintenance Tasks 0 Installation repairs and start up of irrigation in various parks; O Inspection and repairs to all playgrounds; O Installation of tennis nets at city courts; O Place remainder of picnic tables in City Parks; O Prepare KYAC for soccer, baseball and softball tournaments; O Pour concrete for KYAC maintenance area. D Painting and preparation of city athletic fields; fd Fertilize and seeding of parks, athletic fields fd Fertilizing and planting of garden and flowerbeds. D Mow, weed whip, trimming and grooming all 24 park areas and city airport. 0 Water trees in wells; 0 Daily rest rooms cleaning and trash removal at all City Parks and downtown areas. Urban Forestry — Michael Baker, Urban Forester 75 trees were planted in city boulevards in both commercial and residential areas and in various parks. On July 131h, the city of Kalispell experienced a severe windstorm with winds of 65 m.p.h. The result of this windstorm was numerous trees and branches fell. The Parks and Recreation crews spent approximately 3 weeks -pruning hazardous limbs, picking up and chipping branches and working on general clean up. Recreation Department — Jennifer Reese, Val Hemsley, Kathy Smead & Ade Saunier June, July & August Activity Report The City Parks and Recreation Department are extremely busy this time of year. Lots of wonderful programs to keep our youth busy over summer break. Some of the programs include day camps, sports camps, Picnic in the Park, golf, dance and tennis lessons. Aquatic / Skate Park Facility The bid opening for the Woodland Park Pool and Skate Park Facility project was completed on July 18 in City Hall. Unfortunately, as you all are aware, all three bids came in approximately 1,000,000.00 over budget and the council rejected the bids at a Special Council meeting held July 22"a. At this time the consultants are reviewing and re -analyzing the project and will present alternatives to the council at a future workshop. Eagle Scouts A new playground is being installed at Greenbriar Park. This project is a joint project with the parks crew and an Eagle Scout. Completion of the playground is expected in the next couple of weeks. Eagle Scouts have also completed the installation of benches and trash receptacles at the Kalispell Youth Athletic Complex. Kalispell Youth Athletic Complex The youth athletic complex continues to expand with groundbreaking on a cross-country track, 4 PeeWee football fields and 2 new Babe Ruth baseball fields, for a total of 23 athletic fields. These projects are expected to be completed by early fall.
